Friday Nov 11, 2011Dear Dorothy and Thomas Hoobler:

When I was younger, I loved your Japanese mystery series. I am in college now and am taking a Children's Literature class, and I have decided to do my author/illustrator study on the two of you. I had no idea that you had your own website, or that you had written so many other books-I now have so many new books to add to my personal reading list! ;) Please keep up the awesome work, and I look forward to seeing your work in the future! :)

Sincerely,

A Fan

We're flattered that you've kept your interest in our books. Let us know if you need information that you can't find on our website.

Tuesday May 24, 2011I LOVE the samurai mysteries! It's fun to try & test yourself against the Judge and Seikei the first time, then look back at the details & how the previous books intertwine.

Will you be writing more?

Thanks! Tom has begun the process of trying to write another book. You can check his progress on his blog, scribblertw.blogspot.com.

Tuesday Apr 5, 2011Just saw that there's a 2nd Chill book! I've been looking everywhere, but can't find a copy. Would you know? Love the story, adore the kids. I'm 28 and must have read it 20 times since I was 8, haha!

The second book, "Dr. Chill's Task," is only available on smashwords.com. You can download it onto most e-reader formats or directly onto your computer. Let me know if you like it. (or even not!)

Tuesday Mar 29, 2011I read Seven Paths to death because I was looking for a Japanese type book to do for a school project,(we had to dress up as a character) and I wanted an excuse to wear a kimono because I'm VERY into the Japanese culture. Our library just happened to have your book and that Happened to be the first/most interesting book I picked up! I know people say not to judge a book by its cover, but I have to say that's how I chose yours. And I am very glad that I chanced upon your book because from the moment I picked it up and started reading, I never wanted to put it down! Thank you for one of the most enjoyable books that I've read in a while!

Saturday Feb 13, 2010I just finished reading Monsters, Mary Shelley, The curse of Frankenstein. I have read many books on the Shelley Circle and Mary in particular and was so impressed by the new facts I was able to obtain from your book. I felt like I began to really know the characters and so appreciate your honesty and wonderful writing style. Thank you so much! I only wish I could afford to obtain some of the sources that you used. It will be a lifelong hobby to collect those books and read about the fascinating lives the the five people who gathered at Diodati. Again, thank you for enriching my understanding and enjoyment of discovery. Good work!

Thank you, Sherryl. The book was a lot of fun to write (a lot of work, too!), and we're always glad to hear that people enjoyed it.

Wednesday Sep 23, 2009Well, I think your publisher is a short-sighted fool (and I will e-mail and tell him so.) I’m assuming that you have some contract that gives your current publisher first right of refusal otherwise you would have shopped a continuation of the Samurai series to other outlets.

At 57 I’m not your targeted demographic but ran into the first book, and have been hooked ever since – and you’re right about the lack of publicity, there was only one book I could actually find in a bookstore. I feel that good writing is good writing and good writing makes for good reading regardless of the intended audience.

Anyway, since you’ve given me so much pleasure thought I’d try to repay you. This is an excerpt translated from Okakura Kakuzo that I ran across in A Time for Tea, a non-fiction history by Jason Goodwin.

(As background Rikiu, an esteemed tea master, has been accused of being part of an assasination attempt, and has been sentenced to die by his own hand)

“On the day destined for his self-immolation, Rikiu invited his chief disciples to a last tea ceremony. Mournfully at the appointed time the guests met at the portico. As they look into the garden path the trees seem to shudder, and in the rustling of their leaves are heard the whispers of homelss ghosts. Like solemn sentinels before the gates of Hades stand the grey stone lanterns. A wave of rare incense is wafted from the tea-room; it is the summons which bid the guests to enter.

One by one they take their places. In the tokonoma hangs a kakemono – a wonderful writing by an ancient monk dealing with the evanescence of all earthly things. The singing kettle, as it boils over the brazier, sounds like a cicada pouring forth his woes to a departing summer. Soon the host enters the room. Each in turn is served with tea, and each in turn silently drains his cup.

According to established etiquette, the chief guest now asks permission to examine the tea-equippage. Rikui places the various articles before them, with the kakemono. After all have expressed admiration of their beauty, Rikui presents one of them to each of the assembled company. The bowl alone he keeps. ‘Never again shall this cup, polluted by the lips of misfortune, be used by man.’ He speaks and breaks the cup into fragments.

The ceremony is over, the guests, with difficulty restraining their tears, take their last farewell and leave the room. One only, the nearest and dearest is requested to remain and witness the end. Rikui then removes his tea-gown and carefully folds it upon the mat, thereby disclosing the immaculate white death robe which it had hitherto concealed.

Tenderly he gazes on the shining blade of the fatal dagger and in exquisite verse addresses it:

Welcome to thee

O sword of eternity!

Through the Bhudda,

And through Dharuma alike

Thous hast cleft thy way.

With a smile on his face Rikui passed forth into the unknown.”

Thanks so much. We're putting this up online so our younger readers can enjoy it. Many thanks for your encouragement!

Tuesday Sep 1, 2009Wow, it's such a disappointment that the Seikei series might end so soon. They are some of the books that really got my younger brothers reading. They are also some of my favorite books, up there with the Harry Potter and Artemis Fowl series. Please do your very BEST to find a publisher that will take more of the books.

Thursday Jun 25, 2009It has been three months, since I read any of your books I had to promise my mother that I would take a break from any books that involved asian history. I was really bored then. Finally I placed an order for Seven Paths to Death I can't wait for it to arrive. :-). I have a question what are your favorite books to read? One more thing do you have an Amazon Kindle?

We think your mother should be glad you like to read! We like reading history of all kinds. We just wrote a book for adults called THE CRIMES OF PARIS. It's non-fiction and will tell you a lot about France in the time just before World War I (which started in 1914). It's pretty long and not at all like the Seikei books, but you may like it. We don't own a Kindle, but a couple of our books are available on Kindle. We are thinking of writing another book about Seikei and putting it onto the website scribd.com for people to read. What do you think of that idea? (Our publisher doesn't want to print any more books about Seikei, and doesn't try to sell them anyway.)

adapting your existing books to graded readers for the millions of English as a Second or Foreign Language students worldwide? There are more ESL/EFL students worldwide than native speakers of English!!

Or, could you write new Detective Samurai books for that market?

We appreciate your suggestion, but we started our writing careers in educational publishing, and we know that the publishers and editors of texts demand such a low, low level of reading comprehension that it would be hard for us to write a story that would in any way be as much fun as our Samurai Detective series. Too bad, because we really believe that those publishers are keeping students at a low level, rather than encouraging them to improve their reading skills.

Dear Mai,
We want to keep writing them, but the publisher doesn't want any more! You can write to the publisher, Don.Weisberg@us.penguingroup.com, and tell him you want more books about Seikei.

Monday Sep 8, 2008omg, i love your samurai mystery stories.im close to the end of the one im reading now, after that im reading the last one. i never realy liked reading until i came upon your book, in darkness death. after reading your books, i love reading, also you inspired me to write stories. i wrote about two,i just started another yesterday. you are my favorite authors, once im through reading your books i dont know what ill do.

Dear Rebecca,
Thanks so much for your letter. It was our publisher who decided not to print any more of our books about Judge Ooka and Seikei. If it was just up to us, we'd write some more. There are loads of other great books to read, and we're sure you'll find some of them. In fact, we're working on a brand-new series that we will try to persuade some other publisher to print. Watch our site for news!
Best,
Dorothy and Tom

Monday Aug 11, 2008I love your samurai mystery series! Since I was 7 I have hated mystery novels, but these books have been a major exception. Just by reading you books I learned a lot about samurai, honor, geisha and the importance of social status. You guys are two of my favorite authors and if you knew how much I read, you would realize that, that is huge. Again I just have to say that your books are incredible!

God bless,

Sapphire-Neko

Thanks so much. We're flattered.

Let us know how you like "Seven Paths to Death," which will be published this fall. We think it's kind of a good ending to the Seikei series. Thanks for writing.--T&D

Tuesday Feb 26, 2008I was just introduced to your samurai series as well with the book In Darkness, Death. It was a very entertaining read.

I'm going to pick up thew rest of the series today.

1)THE GHOST OF TOKAIDO INN

2)THE DEMON IN THE TEA HOUSE

3)IN DARKNESS, DEATH

4)THE SWORD THAT CUT THE BURNING GRASS

5)A SAMURAI NEVER FEARS DEATH

Five so far and one on the way. Do you plan on writing any more stories for this series?

p.s. Do you know any other good books that features Judge Ooka(since you said he was a popular Japanese Character, like Sherlock Holmes) I figured there might be some other good books out there about him.

The publisher really isn't interested in more books about Seikei and the Judge, so we're moving on to other projects, which we hope you will like even better! If you want to read more Ooka stories, I.G. Edmonds has at least two collections of them out. Thanks for writing!

Saturday Jan 5, 2008I have read 'the ghost in the tokaido inn' and i liked it very much. One thing that i wondered about, although minor, was that Seikei did not mention to Judge Ooka about the guard who asked Seikei to tell the Judge that he hadn't forgotten him.

I have also read 'A Samurai never fears death' it was amazing! one thing I would be glad if someone told me- did the head master actually kill the first victim? or did the owner of the theater kill both of the victims due to his insanity? (I really liked how in the end, Seikei defeated the owner of the theater by threatening the puppet :)

We thought the theater owner killed both victims. Thanks for writing!

I've just started it and like very much the way it reads.

Sunday Jul 22, 2007I am a fan of your samurai detective novels. My all time favorite is "The Sword that Cut through the Burning Grass", as it is based on the Kusanagi legend. I am so excited that you already worked on two more stories, and that you have one already on the way. These stories are the prime reason why I read. Much love to you both!

Saturday Apr 14, 2007I read 'The Monsters' and was totally taken with the story of the five people's lives. For the first time - I read Mary Shelley's Frankenstein and ordered a book on the web that has Polidori's Vampyre. I work in a high school and have recommended the book as a 'read' for our reading club.

I checked out your other books and was disappointed to discover that nearly all of them are based on US History. I live in Canada and really enjoy reading historical books about Europe, Africa, and China. Sooooo - if you have written anything along those lines plese let me know because I must have missed it.

Your research and writing made it hard to put the book down. And - when I finished - I felt like I should just start right over again. Problem was - it was a library book and it was on hold for someone else. Thank you very much. P

Wednesday Mar 7, 2007I'm so glad I finally found you're book! I read it years ago, but I loved it and wanted to read the rest in the series, but over the years I'd forgotten to, and I lost track of the name of the book, but I never forgot the plot (in particular it was the first of the series of samurai books). I've been googling all sorts of things for weeks to find these books and I finally found them!! I think the books rock even though I'm way too mature for them, their plot is way more interesting than the things it get to read in my English class (Their Eyes Were Watching God). I love fiction and I love the samurai aspect, and mysteries are one of my favorite types of stories. Thank you for writing such great books!
